NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms, Heavy Rainfall, Flood Risk Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has forecast cloudy conditions, thunderstorms, and widespread rainfall across the country on Friday, 17th July 2026, with a high risk of flooding in parts of the South-South and South-East.
According to the NiMet weather outlook, the Northern States will begin the day with patches of clouds and isolated thunderstorms with light rainfall over parts of Kebbi and Sokoto States in the morning. By afternoon and evening, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Kaduna States.
In the Central States, thunderstorms with light rainfall are expected in the morning over parts of Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
NiMet said thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall will become more widespread across most parts of the region later in the day.
The Southern States are expected to experience a wet day. Cloudy skies with rainfall are forecast in the morning over parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, and Akwa Ibom States. Moderate rainfall is expected across most parts of the region in the afternoon and evening.
NiMet warned of a high risk of flooding over parts of Rivers, Delta, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States. Residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas have been urged to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
The agency also advised motorists to drive carefully during rainfall and avoid flooded roads, while airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective planning.
NiMet encouraged Nigerians to “Stay Weather-Smart, Stay Ahead” as the rainy conditions persist.
