NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms and Widespread Rain Across Nigeria Friday

—

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has forecast cloudy skies, thunderstorms, and widespread rainfall across Nigeria on Friday, July 3, 2026, urging residents to stay weather-smart.

NiMet expects patches of clouds across the Northern region in the morning, with thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall later in the day over parts of Katsina, Kebbi, Kano, Bauchi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna, Gombe, and Taraba States. Residents should anticipate moderate rainfall, lightning, and occasional strong winds in affected areas.

In the Central region, a slight chance of light rainfall is forecast for the morning in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Niger, Kwara, Nasarawa, and Kogi States. Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected later over parts of Kogi, Benue, and Kwara States, with isolated storms that may produce brief heavy rainfall and localized flooding.

The Southern region will see thunderstorms with moderate rainfall in the morning across Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Edo, Lagos, and Bayelsa States, followed by moderate rainfall across the entire South through the afternoon and evening. Widespread wet conditions could lead to localized flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

NiMet is urging caution as strong winds may precede thunderstorms. Motorists are advised to drive carefully during rainfall and periods of poor visibility, avoid floodwaters, and not shelter under tall trees during thunderstorms. Airline operators are also advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for safe flight operations.
