The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has taken a historic step toward sustainability with the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) for airside operations across Nigeria’s five international airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.
Speaking on the development, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence.
He noted that the deployment of EVs across major airports represents another milestone in NiMet’s drive to modernize its operations and reinforce its leadership in green growth and climate-conscious governance.
“This initiative is part of our broader strategy to build a sustainable operational model that supports both the environment and the economy,” Professor Anosike said.
“NiMet remains committed to advancing technologies that ensure efficiency, reliability, and environmental stewardship in all our operations.”
This groundbreaking initiative marks the first use of electric vehicles in the nation’s aviation sector and aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes clean energy and climate resilience.
The newly deployed electric vehicles, capable of traveling up to 200 kilometers on a single charge, will be supported by dedicated charging stations at each of the airports.
By adopting electric mobility, NiMet is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower maintenance costs, and contribute to Nigeria’s national carbon credit goals.
The initiative reflects the agency’s commitment to sustainability while aligning with global best practices in climate action and environmental responsibility.
