The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) says Nigerians should expect a significant reduction in national grid collapses between 2026 and 2030 as it intensifies reforms to strengthen electricity transmission and system stability.
The General Manager, Research, NISO, Dr Deji Ojo, gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.
According to Ojo, the organisation’s ongoing technical reforms, stricter compliance measures and collaboration with key stakeholders are already improving the stability of the national grid.
NISO was established on April 30, 2024, by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) following the unbundling of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) under the Electricity Act, 2023.
Ojo noted that Nigeria experienced several grid collapses in 2024 before NISO became fully operational.
He said the number of grid disturbances declined significantly in 2025, while the few incidents recorded in 2026 were largely caused by gas shortages that affected electricity generation.
According to him, reduced power generation weakens the stability of the national grid and increases its vulnerability to system disturbances.
He explained that NISO is putting in place new operational frameworks aimed at strengthening grid management and improving the reliability of electricity supply across the country.
While acknowledging that grid collapses cannot be completely eliminated because they are influenced by generation capacity and the balance between electricity supply and demand, Ojo said the operator remains committed to reducing their frequency.

“We will continue implementing measures to minimise system disturbances and maintain a more stable national grid,” he said.
Ojo added that NISO has strengthened collaboration with critical players in the electricity value chain to tackle the root causes of grid instability.
He also disclosed that the organisation is deploying advanced systems to improve real-time visibility of the national grid, enabling operators to detect faults early, respond more quickly to disruptions and enhance overall operational control.
According to him, the improved monitoring systems will play a key role in delivering a more stable and reliable electricity network for Nigerians.
