Nigeria’s Foreign Reserves Rise To $54.61bn, Gain $12.76bn In One Year

Nigeria’s gross foreign exchange reserves climbed to $54.61 billion as of September 14, 2026, representing a $12.76 billion increase from $41.84 billion recorded a year earlier.

The reserves also rose by about $707.75 million in September, increasing from $53.90 billion on September 1 to $54.61 billion by September 14.

The latest figure marks continued growth in Nigeria’s external reserves, which crossed the $50 billion threshold in June and rose above $52 billion in August. The balance has now gained about $2.28 billion since August 14, when it stood at $52.32 billion.

The increase comes alongside stronger foreign capital inflows.Nigeria attracted $10.37 billion in foreign capital in Q1 2026, up 83.8% from the same period in 2025, while foreign portfolio investment reached $3.37 billion in January.

The News Chronicle reports that economists say that while portfolio inflows can serve to swell reserves and provide liquidity in the foreign exchange market, they are vulnerable to fluctuations in interest rates, exchange rate expectations and global risk appetite.

The latest reserve level is also above the CBN’s projected $51.04 billion target for 2026.
