Nigerians to Pay ₦500 Extra on Every ₦10,000 Petrol by 2026

Starting from January 2026, Nigerians will be required to pay a new tax of N500 for every N10,000 spent on petrol consumption.

The new policy is part of the government’s recently approved tax law, which aims to increase revenue for infrastructure and social development projects.

According to report obtained by The News Chronicle, with this development, the cost of petrol purchases will rise slightly as consumers factor in the additional tax.

For example, a motorist buying N20,000 worth of petrol will pay an extra N1,000 as tax.

While government officials argue that the levy will boost funding for national development, many citizens are already expressing concerns about the potential impact on living costs, especially given the rising prices of goods and services.
