Nigerian Fintechs Strengthen Compliance Teams Amid Central Bank’s Restrictions

In response to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) restrictions earlier this year, prominent Nigerian fintech companies, including Kuda Bank, Moniepoint, OPay, and Palmpay, are taking significant steps to bolster their compliance operations.
This shift comes after the CBN’s directive in April, which prohibited these firms from onboarding new customers, prompting a new focus on regulatory adherence.
Moniepoint led the way by expanding its transaction monitoring team, bringing in seasoned professionals from fintech and traditional banking backgrounds.
Their recent hires include former employees of OPay and Flutterwave, alongside a compliance team lead with substantial banking industry experience.
Likewise, Kuda Bank recruited compliance analysts and fraud specialists, with OPay and Palmpay reinforcing their teams with experts from both fintech and established banks.
Historically, fintech firms in Nigeria leaned towards minimal compliance to speed up customer acquisition, but the CBN’s new standards and the April ban reshaped this outlook.
The regulators’ requirements emphasize the need for stringent Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols and effective transaction monitoring.
This shift also reflects a broader trend in the industry toward safeguarding financial integrity amid rising concerns over fraudulent activities and lax verification processes.
With these hires, Nigerian fintechs aim to not only align with CBN’s standards but also reassure investors by establishing robust compliance frameworks.
Whether these measures will ultimately curb fraud remains to be seen, but they mark a decisive move toward a more regulated fintech landscape in Nigeria.
