The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adamawa/Taraba Area Command, Yola, has reported a series of successful interceptions of premium motor spirit (PMS) being smuggled into Cameroon, on Saturday.
Over the past two weeks, they seized PMS worth over N10 million, attributing the success to collaboration, effective border management, intelligence sharing, and the dedication of their officers.
Comptroller Garba Bature Bashir expressed satisfaction with the efforts of the Command in combating smuggling activities.
He highlighted the interception of PMS destined for Cameroon, emphasizing the absence of apprehended suspects who fled upon interception.
The seized items include 12,435 liters of PMS stored in jerry cans, along with a used Mitsubishi truck and a motorcycle used for transportation.
Bashir stressed the detrimental effects of smuggling on the nation, including hindering economic growth, undermining trade policies, compromising food security, and posing security risks due to links with illicit activities like money laundering and terrorism financing.
He affirmed the Command’s commitment to eradicating smuggling and called for cooperation from border communities, patriotic citizens, transporters, oil marketers, and the media in providing intelligence, preventing supply chains, and raising awareness about the dangers of smuggling.
Bashir expressed gratitude for the support from the management of the Nigeria Customs Service and recognized the collaborative efforts of various Customs units and other security agencies.
He urged continued vigilance and cooperation in the fight against smuggling, thanking attendees for their participation.
