The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), FCT Command, recently arrested a woman named Precious Yusuf for attempting to smuggle drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja.
This incident was detailed in a statement released by the Command Public Relations Officer, Samson Duza, on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to Mr. Duza, Precious Yusuf visited the Kuje custodial center on Tuesday, July 9, pretending to be a visitor to one of the inmates.
During the routine search conducted by the officers at the center, items suspected to be Indian hemp and other dangerous drugs were found concealed in food packs within a carton.
“The culprit confessed to have been sent to bring this to an inmate of the custodial centre,†Mr. Duza stated.
Mr. Duza further quoted the Controller of the FCT Command, Ibrahim Usman, who ordered that the suspect be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.
Mr. Usman issued a stern warning to drug peddlers, urging them to refrain from attempting to smuggle illicit substances into the custodial centers under the guise of visits.
He assured that the officers and men of the center are vigilant and prepared to thwart such attempts.
He also appealed to the general public and well-meaning Nigerians to support the Service in its efforts to reform inmates and maintain societal safety.
Mr. Usman emphasized the commitment of the NCoS to ensure the safe custody of those legally interned in their facilities.
