The Nigerian Army has deployed a newly formed battalion to Niger State to reinforce ongoing security operations and combat terrorists and other criminal elements across vulnerable communities.
The battalion arrived in the state on Monday, August 10, 2026, following the recent expansion of the Nigerian Army.
The deployment was welcomed by residents and the Executive Chairmen of Mashegu, Mariga and Kontagora Local Government Areas, who commended the Army for strengthening security in the area. The council chairmen also pledged the cooperation of host communities and promised to provide credible intelligence to support military operations.
Addressing the troops on Thursday, August 13, Commander of 18 Brigade, Brigadier General Husaini Rabiu Toro, charged them to maintain discipline, professionalism, and vigilance while carrying out their duties.
Toro urged the troops to work closely with local communities and respect the rights of law-abiding citizens while operating strictly within the rules of engagement.
He further directed the personnel to decisively neutralise terrorists and criminal elements operating within their area of responsibility.
The newly deployed battalion is expected to commence operations immediately, with a focus on dominating vulnerable communities in Mashegu, Mariga, Kontagora and Magama LGAs.
The move is aimed at denying terrorists freedom of action and strengthening security across the affected areas.
The Headquarters of 18 Brigade Nigerian Army and its subordinate units reaffirmed their commitment to working with stakeholders and other security agencies to sustain peace and stability in Niger State and its environs.
