Nigerian Army confirms soldier’s arrest for killing a truck driver in Maiduguri

A disagreement between a soldier and a truck driver at a checkpoint resulted in an incident on Boxing Day. The news of this event has caused commercial drivers to boycott the busy border road in protest, leaving numerous travelers stranded.

Lt. Col. A.Y. Jingina, the 7 Division Public Relations Officer, confirmed the soldier’s arrest on Thursday in a statement. The army initiated an investigation after receiving a complaint from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). 

Jingina emphasized the army’s commitment to a peaceful resolution, engaging with NURTW for this purpose.

He assured the deceased’s family and NURTW that justice would be served, and the Division is dedicated to thorough investigations.

The arrested soldier is under scrutiny, and the Division maintains a strong stance against unprofessional conduct, operating within the confines of the law.

The Borno Government, represented by Prof. Usman Tar, the Commissioner of Information and Internal Security, expressed concern over the incident.

The government is actively pursuing the matter to ensure justice prevails. Prof. Tar urged the public, especially members of the Road Transport Workers Union, to remain patient and maintain decorum while the legal process unfolds.

The incident prompted a boycott by commercial drivers, leading to stranded travelers. The army responded by arresting the involved soldier, initiating investigations, and engaging with NURTW for a peaceful resolution.

The Borno State Government is dedicated to ensuring that justice prevails through thorough investigations and proper legal procedures.
