But ah, my dear friends, let us cast our gaze upon the roads beneath these majestic chariots. What do we find? Potholes galore, my darlings! Oh, the horror! It’s as if the roads themselves have decided to play a cruel joke on us, daring us to navigate their treacherous terrain with grace and poise.
Recently, I ventured to Jos, the capital city of Plateau state in Nigeria. An old city, steeped in history and tradition, but alas, the road from Forest to Jos is nothing but a shameful sight. It twists and turns like a serpent, each pothole a gaping maw waiting to devour unsuspecting tires.
And yet, amidst this absurdity, there is a certain charm to be found. For you see, dear reader, the people of Nigeria have mastered the art of making do with what they have. Yes, despite the odds, they continue to glide through the chaos with a sense of style and panache that is simply unparalleled.
On 17th December 2023, I commuted through Auchi to Uromi, of Edo state, the road there is a clear case of death traps for road users. But on this same road, you see beauty on wheels of different brands and styles. It’s as if the cars are determined to defy the odds and shine brightly amidst the crumbling asphalt.
However, it’s high time we addressed the elephant in the room – Nigeria’s dire need for infrastructure development. To ensure safer and smoother journeys for all, it’s imperative that government authorities prioritize investment in road maintenance and construction. By allocating resources to repair existing roads and build new ones, we can create a transportation network that matches the elegance of our automobiles.
Furthermore, initiatives to promote sustainable transportation options, such as public transit systems and cycling lanes, can help alleviate the strain on Nigeria’s roads while reducing carbon emissions and promoting healthier lifestyles.
