Nigeria vs. Libya: 11 Journalists Kidnapped, One Dead

Around 11 journalists traveling to Uyo to cover the Super Eagles’ 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Libya were kidnapped by suspected hoodlums in Isseke community, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

According to the Minister of Sports Development, Mr. John Owan Enoh, who condemned the attack, seven have been rescued, three remain in captivity, and one has been confirmed dead.
“I strongly condemn the kidnap of journalists who were in the line of duty by suspected hoodlums in Isseke community, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The journalists were on their way to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to cover the 2025 AFCON qualifier between the Super Eagles and the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.
Seven of them have been rescued by officers of the Joint Security Force in Anambra State. As of this moment, three are still held captive, and one is deceased.”
Nigeria hosted Libya during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers in Uyo, Nigeria, yesterday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
Nigeria beat Libya by a lone goal scored by Dele Bashiru in the second half after several missed chances. Nigeria now nears qualification after interim manager Austin Eguavoen guided the team to the top of its group with 7 points, following wins against Benin Republic and Libya and a draw against Rwanda.
