Liberia has reaffirmed its enduring gratitude to Nigeria for its support during the country’s years of conflict, describing the relationship between both nations as one that will never be forgotten.
Liberia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Ethel Davis, made the remark on Wednesday during a meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Sola Enikanolaiye, in Abuja.
According to Davis, Nigeria played a pivotal role in supporting Liberia during one of the most difficult periods in its history.
“Nigeria is a country that Liberia will never forget because this country was there for us through our darkest period in history.
“It is something that we will never forget,” she said.
She added that Nigeria occupies a special place in the hearts of Liberians because of its longstanding support.
“If you wake any Liberian from sleep and ask who our best friend is, the first country that will come to mind is Nigeria,” she said.
Davis expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the people of Nigeria for their unwavering support over the years.
She said Liberia was committed to exploring new opportunities to strengthen bilateral relations with Nigeria in the spirit of African brotherhood.
According to her, the meeting focused on expanding cooperation and deepening the longstanding diplomatic relationship between the two countries.
“We are here to further deepen the relationship that exists between our two countries,” she added.
Responding, Enikanolaiye said Nigeria and Liberia had enjoyed a long and historically rich diplomatic relationship.
He noted that Nigeria’s contribution to restoring peace, security and stability in Liberia reflected the depth of the ties between both countries.
According to him, the relationship has evolved beyond government-to-government cooperation to include strong people-to-people connections.
“This visit is intended to further consult on our bilateral relations, ensure there are no irritants and fully explore opportunities for closer cooperation,” he said.
The minister welcomed Liberia’s proposed investment summit scheduled for August in Lagos, noting that Nigeria would participate and support efforts to strengthen private sector collaboration.
He said the summit would deepen commercial, trade and economic relations between both countries while further advancing diplomatic ties.
Enikanolaiye added that stronger cooperation would promote the welfare, prosperity, peace and security of the peoples of Nigeria and Liberia.
