The Nigeria Football Federation has terminated the contract of Super Falcons coach Justine Madugu and his technical staff after their shocking loss in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
Madugu’s tenure was short but memorable as he led the Falcons to a record-breaking achievement of winning their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in 2024.
The 59-year-old former coach signed a deal in March 2024 after the exit of his predecessor, Randy Waldrum, from the position.
His journey was halted as Nigeria failed to progress in the WAFCON 2025 playoffs after losing 2-1 to South Africa, ending their 14-year unbeaten streak in the tournament, which saw them miss out on the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The News Chronicle reports that the NFF has also set up a fact-finding committee led by former secretary general Fanny Amun to investigate the reasons behind the national teams’ recent struggles. The panel includes former Falcons captain Desire Oparanozie and ex-Super Eagles captain Mutiu Adepoju and has two weeks to submit its findings
The crisis could also affect the NFF leadership, with elections scheduled for September 27 facing uncertainty as calls grow for wider reforms within Nigerian football.
