Nigeria Ranks 31st In Data Affordability

With an average price of $0.39 (N390) (N1000/$) for a gigabit (GB) of mobile data, Nigeria is ranked 31st out of 237 countries with the cheapest mobile data.

Cable.co.uk conducted an investigation using data from 5,603 mobile data plans across 237 nations between July 5, 2023, and September 6, 2023, to reach this conclusion.

Israel is the nation offering 1GB of mobile data at the lowest average cost, according to the analysis, at $0.02.

With an average price of $43.75 per gigabyte for mobile data, Zimbabwe is the most expensive place in the world to purchase mobile data—more than 2000 times more expensive than Israel.

Italy has the second-cheapest average price per gigabyte, at $0.085. Third position goes to Fiji ($0.088).

Dan Howdle, Consumer Telecoms Analyst at Cable.co.uk, stated: “Our yearly mobile data pricing tracking study is as much a measure of the quantity of data offered as it is the price of data more broadly.”

“After all, those countries with the most improved (cheaper) pricing across the five years our tracker now covers tend to be those offering tens or even hundreds of times more data in 2023 as was available for similar money in 2019.”

“It’s encouraging to see the price of data coming down across the globe as a whole, with the vast majority of countries offering 1GB of mobile data for less than $2.”

The company observed that nations with recently installed 5G or long-established, widely available 4G infrastructure typically rank lower on the cost spectrum.

Sub-Saharan Africa is home to just six of the world’s 50 cheapest countries; Malawi, which is the cheapest in the area at $0.38, is ranked 29th internationally. This information was discovered through further study.

Additionally, five of the ten most expensive countries in the world are located in this region. Saint Helena ($40.13), South Sudan ($23.70), Zambia ($8.01), the Central African Republic ($10.9), and Zimbabwe ($43.75) are the most expensive countries in both the region and the globe, respectively.

According to Cable, the average cost of one gigabyte of mobile data is more than $2.59 in all four of the North American countries, making it the most costly region globally.

Italy is the most affordable country in Western Europe for mobile data; it ranks second globally, with an average cost of $0.09 for 1GB.
