Nigeria and China are set to strengthen cooperation on migration management, border security and intelligence sharing following a bilateral meeting between officials of both countries.
The agreement was reached between Comptroller General of Immigration Kemi Nandap and senior officials of China’s National Immigration Administration during a meeting in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province.
The News Chronicle reports that the discussions focused on improving international cooperation against document fraud and other migration-related security threats while strengthening Nigeria’s border management capabilities.
NIS Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, said the proposed partnership would cover technical exchanges, intelligence sharing and capacity building.
The meeting was held alongside a migration management sub forum that attracted more than 2,000 participants from 139 countries and international organisations between September 8 and 11.
Nigeria also shared its experience in tackling passport fraud and falsification of records during a roundtable session at the event.
The development comes as the NIS continues to adopt technology to improve border control. The Service recently adopted an International Civil Aviation Organization e passport verification system to strengthen travel document authentication.
The NIS said deeper international cooperation would help Nigeria respond more effectively to emerging migration and border security challenges.
