The government of Niger is exploring the option of utilizing former servicemen to tackle security challenges within the state.
Governor Umar Bago shared this information during a discussion with reporters on the sidelines of the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Minna, the state capital, on Monday.
Bago, who was represented by his deputy, Yakubu Garba, mentioned that the state is considering engaging ex-servicemen due to their valuable experience.
He highlighted the potential of these individuals to provide insightful advice, given their familiarity with the current security issues plaguing the state.
As stated by the governor, “They can advise us on what to do, especially as the state is being ravaged by insecurity; most of them have seen what we are seeing today.”
The Niger governor emphasized the significance of leveraging the ex-servicemen’s firsthand experience, particularly in addressing the re-emerging security challenges faced by the state.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Bago expressed confidence in the ex-servicemen’s ability to contribute effectively towards finding solutions.
“Because most of what is happening today is a re-emerging issue, they have seen war before, and I believe they can help us with what we can do to be able to address insecurity in the state.”
Moreover, the governor affirmed the commitment of the state government to supporting the wives and families of deceased soldiers, recognizing the sacrifices made by these individuals in the service of the nation.
In addition to Bago’s remarks, Mamuda Ahmed, the state chairman of the Nigeria Legion, conveyed appreciation to the Niger state government for instilling hope among the legion members.
Ahmed also appealed to the government to consider employing members of the legion who have undergone military training, highlighting their potential contribution to addressing security concerns within the state.
