Niger car crash claims lives of bride and 12 others

A tragic incident unfolded near Lukoro in Edati, Niger state, where a devastating car crash claimed the lives of several individuals.

The heartbreaking incident involved a newlywed bride, five bridesmaids, her brother-in-law, and six others.

The accident occurred on a Friday evening and was attributed to overspeeding and reckless overtaking. The collision between the bride’s vehicle and another led to a loss of control, resulting in a profound loss of life.

Reports indicate that a total of 20 people were involved, with 13 losing their lives, and seven others sustaining critical injuries.

Tsukwan Kumar, the Niger state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the details of the accident.

The crash involved two vehicles—an ash Toyota Corolla traveling from Mokwa to Bida and a commercial Nissan bus with registration heading from Minna to Ogbomosho.

The casualties included eight female adults, four male adults, and one male child, while the injured comprised four female adults, one male adult, one male child, and one female child.

The injured victims were promptly taken to the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Bida for medical treatment.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, nine of the deceased victims were handed over to their respective relatives at the crash scene upon identification, while the remaining four were transported to the General Hospital Kutigi mortuary.

The gravity of the situation is further emphasized by the list of belongings and personal effects of the victims, including five phones, one International passport, one NIN slip, three handbags, two traveling boxes, goods, and other items, all of which were handed over to the Police Outpost in Wuya.

This heart-wrenching incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of unsafe driving practices and the importance of road safety measures to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.
