Niger Boat Mishap: Death Toll Rises To Nine, NSEMA Official says

With ongoing search operations to recover the remaining bodies of victims affected by the Niger boat mishap, authorities of Niger State Emergency Management Agency have reported that 9 bodies have been recovered from the unfortunate incident which happened at Shiroro Local Government  Area of Niger state.

The NSEMA Head of Relief and Rehabilitation, Alh. Salihu  Garba, during an interview on Sunday 19th of November said that at least 34 persons were reportedly onboard where 10 allegedly lost their lives while 22 were rescued by locals in an incident that occurred on the 16th of November 2023.

Garba added that the affected persons were said to be mostly traders conveying their goods from Zongoru Community in Bassa to Gijiwa ahead of market day, Friday in Kuta, Shiroro Local Government.

The NSEMA official revealed the names of those who lost their lives onboard to include; Farida Muntari, Sharhabila Sagir, Bubakar Sadiq, Na’ima Ibrahim, Amina, Safaratu Ibrahim, Sadiq Ibrahim and Rafiya Yakubu. He however stated that the identity of two of the deceased was unknown  stating that all the victims were from Zongoru Community.

As of the time the boat capsized, 24 adults as well as 10 children were reportedly onboard.
