NHRC Records Over 1.5 Million Human Rights Violation Complaints in Six Months

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says it recorded more than 1.5 million alleged human rights violations across Nigeria in the first six months of 2026.

The figures are contained in the commission’s Human Rights Dashboard and Observatory reports covering the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from January to June.

The NHRC received 180,341 complaints in January, 223,144 in February, 256,132 in March, 266,787 in April, 268,787 in May, and 326,113 in June.

In a note accompanying the report, the Executive Secretary of the commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN), described the dashboard as a critical accountability tool for tracking trends, identifying emerging risks, and highlighting areas requiring urgent intervention.

“We in the commission are alarmed by incidents of sexual violence against children. This pattern of sustained, unresolved violence demands urgent, coordinated intervention,” Ojukwu said.

He described May 2026 as a particularly troubling month for human rights in Nigeria, citing a series of incidents that tested the nation’s commitment to the protection of human dignity and fundamental freedoms.

“Within 31 days, we witnessed incidents that deeply challenged our collective commitment to human dignity and fundamental freedoms.

“Violent attacks, kidnappings, communal clashes, displacement, gender-based violence, mob actions, and alleged abuses linked to law enforcement activities remained major concerns during the period under review,” he said.

Ojukwu also expressed concern over the increasing cases of alleged extrajudicial killings involving law enforcement and security agencies.

NAN reports that the NHRC launched the Human Rights Dashboard in 2024 to strengthen monitoring and documentation of human rights violations across the country.
