NEWS FLASH: Tinubu Withdraws Pardon for Maryam Sanda, Orders Review of Clemency List

—

President Bola Tinubu has withdrawn the proposed pardon for Maryam Sanda and other high-profile convicts, citing national security and justice concerns.

A statement by his Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, said the President rejected clemency for offenders convicted of serious crimes such as murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, and fraud.

Sanda, sentenced to death in 2020 for killing her husband, was among those removed from the list after a fresh review.

Tinubu also ordered the relocation of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy to the Ministry of Justice and directed new guidelines requiring consultations with agencies like the EFCC, NDLEA, Police, and DSS before any recommendations.

He reaffirmed his commitment to a fair and accountable justice system that balances mercy with responsibility
