NEWS FLASH: Nine Soldiers Killed, Commander Missing After ISWAP Ambush in Borno

At least nine Nigerian soldiers have been confirmed dead following an ambush by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters near Damask village in Borno State, close to the Nigeria–Niger border.

According to reports, the attackers detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) planted along the route before opening fire on troops who were on a routine patrol in the area.

Only eight soldiers reportedly managed to return safely to their base, while several others remain missing, including their commanding officer, a Major. The bodies of nine soldiers were later recovered from the scene of the attack.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian military has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
