Netherlands Advance as Japan and Sweden Draw in Group F

—

Japan and Sweden played out a 1-1 draw, while the Netherlands defeated Tunisia 3-1 as Group F matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded on Thursday.

Japan and Sweden were locked in a goalless contest in the first half before the game opened up after the break.

Japan took the lead in the 56th minute when Daizen Maeda finished from close range after a fine assist from Ritsu Doan.

Sweden responded quickly, equalising in the 62nd minute through Anthony Elanga, who converted Viktor Gyökeres’ pass.

Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but neither could find a breakthrough as the match ended 1-1.

The result was enough for both teams to progress to the Round of 32.

Japan will face Brazil in the Round of 32, while Sweden will await confirmation of its opponent after the completion of other group fixtures.

In the other Group F match, the Netherlands made a fast start against Tunisia, taking the lead in the third minute when Ellyes Skhiri turned the ball into his own net.

The Dutch doubled their advantage in the seventh minute through Brian Brobbey, who finished off a pass from captain Virgil van Dijk.

Tunisia pulled one back in the 54th minute through Houssem Mastouri, who finished from a Hannibal Mejbri assist to briefly raise hopes of a comeback.

However, the Netherlands restored their two-goal cushion in the 63rd minute when Jan Paul van Hecke scored to seal a 3-1 victory.

The win ensured the Netherlands progressed to the Round of 32, while Tunisia exited the tournament after finishing bottom of the group without a point.
