The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced the destruction of 1,167 mobile phones confiscated from inmates across correctional centres nationwide.
The agency also revealed that N2.57 million in cash, illegally brought into prison facilities, was recovered during operations.
Additionally, disciplinary action was taken against 147 personnel found complicit in smuggling prohibited items into correctional centres.
Speaking on the development, Sylvester Nwakuche, Comptroller-General of the NCoS, described the act as a serious threat to security and rehabilitation efforts within the prison system.
He warned that strict sanctions would continue to be imposed on anyone caught smuggling contraband into correctional facilities, including staff members and visitors.
