The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a public health advisory on rabies, reminding Nigerians that although the viral disease is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, it can be prevented through vaccination, responsible animal ownership and prompt post-exposure care.
According to the NCDC, rabies is a viral infection transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, usually through bites or scratches.
The agency said the disease is nearly 100 percent fatal once clinical symptoms develop, making early prevention and immediate medical attention essential.
To reduce the risk of infection, the NCDC advised members of the public to avoid contact with stray or unfamiliar animals, ensure that pets are vaccinated against rabies and prevent them from roaming freely.
It also urged Nigerians to report animals displaying unusual or aggressive behaviour to the nearest veterinary clinic.

The NCDC stressed that immediate action is critical following an animal bite or scratch.
It advised victims to wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and clean water and seek medical attention immediately for appropriate post-exposure treatment.
The agency also urged Nigerians to promote responsible pet ownership and remain vigilant against rabies as part of efforts to #EndRabies.
