NCC to Support Cultural Re-orientation in Nigeria Through Short Codes

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced its commitment to supporting cultural re-orientation efforts in Nigeria.
This initiative aims to strengthen the country’s cultural identity and ensure that Nigerian values are prominently reflected in media and telecommunications.
Telecom companies in Nigeria are now required to provide subscribers with content that preserves and positively shapes Nigerian culture.
This directive is part of a broader effort to prevent foreign content from overshadowing local cultural expressions.
The announcement was made by Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, during a visit by Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, Executive Secretary and CEO of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO).
Dr. Maida emphasized the importance of using Nigerian-made content to maintain and enhance the country’s cultural identity.
He noted that many Nigerian movies currently lack authentic Nigerian accents, clothing, and cultural themes, which dilutes the nation’s cultural representation.
NCC has expressed its support for NICO’s proposal to include cultural content in caller tunes, short codes, and robo-calls.
Ajiboye also highlighted the need to integrate cultural content into the digital age, leveraging digital infrastructure to reach a wider audience.
