NCC Launches New Device Management System to Boost Mobile Security

—

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has rolled out a new Device Management System (DMS) designed to bolster mobile device security across the country.
This initiative aims to create a Central Equipment Identity Register, which will unify the tracking of mobile devices among all Nigerian network operators.
The DMS is set to achieve several objectives: it will help prevent phone theft, combat the circulation of counterfeit devices, and ensure that devices meet regulatory standards.
Mobile network operators are now required to connect to the DMS and adhere to the NCC’s network-related policies.
Additionally, the system will synchronize with international IMEI databases to enhance tracking and security.
To support this initiative, a new device registration fee has been introduced, distinct from the existing type approval fees.
The NCC’s goals for the DMS include increasing transparency, safeguarding consumer interests, enhancing national security, and boosting government revenue.
By reducing the use of stolen phones for criminal activities and improving the security of Nigeria’s communication infrastructure, the DMS is expected to have a significant positive impact.
