NBC Announces Plans To Regulate Social Media

—

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has elaborated on its intentions to regulate social media platforms in Nigeria.

Mrs. Francisca Aiyetan, the Director of Broadcast Monitoring at the NBC, emphasized the need for regulation to prevent the potential misguidance of young people.

In a conversation with Trust Radio, Aiyetan explained that many countries worldwide are working on social media regulation, and Nigeria is no exception.

She highlighted the importance of strengthening legislation to address the evolving landscape of broadcasting and content sharing.

Aiyetan also mentioned that the NBC engages with platform owners such as Google, YouTube, and TikTok, urging them to remove content that is deemed harmful or threatening to the Nigerian populace. She stressed the importance of working in conjunction with these platforms.

The topic of social media regulation gained prominence after Director-General of the NBC, Balarabe Ilelah, revealed that a regulation bill had been submitted to the National Assembly. Ilelah characterized the challenges posed by social media as a “monster” and indicated that the bill aims to revise the NBC Act to encompass social media oversight, given that the current law lacks provisions for such control.
