Nasarawa to Extend Nomadic Schools’ Hours to Boost Enrolment

The Nasarawa State Government plans to review its Nomadic Education policy and extend teaching hours in nomadic schools to improve pupils’ enrolment, attendance and retention.

Kande Adamu, Special Assistant to Gov. Abdullahi Sule on Nomadic Education, disclosed this on Thursday in Lafia during an on-the-spot assessment of nomadic schools across the state.

Adamu said the proposed review would extend daily learning from the current 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. schedule to 8 a.m. to noon, giving pupils more time to learn and reducing the number of children who remain at home.

She said the government would also establish community-based committees to monitor teachers’ attendance and performance, while encouraging parents to enroll their children in school and keep them there.

According to her, the government would designate a day each week for parents to visit schools and receive sensitization on the importance of education.

This has become necessary because some parents prefer to send their children out for grazing instead of school,” Adamu said.

She expressed concern over the commitment of some teachers, alleging that some arrived as late as 9:30 a.m., taught for about 30 minutes and left.

Adamu said extending the school hours would help tackle the problem and improve the quality of education delivered in nomadic communities.

She said Gov. Sule remained committed to ensuring that every child in Nasarawa had access to education, adding that the government would introduce measures that would encourage parents and teachers to play their roles effectively.

The special assistant urged parents to take advantage of government initiatives and prioritize their children’s education.

She also assured nomadic communities that the government would continue to provide facilities and other support needed to improve access to education across the state.
