Namadi Appoints Late Emir’s Son as 17th Emir of Gumel

Gov. Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Bala Ibrahim, announced the appointment in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday in Dutse.

Muhammad succeeds his father, the late Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, who died in Egypt on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, after a protracted illness.

The late monarch ruled the Gumel Emirate for 46 years, from 1981 to 2026.

According to the SSG, the governor approved the appointment following recommendations from the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.

Upon the recommendation of both the Gumel Emirate Council Kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Jigawa, Malam Umar Namadi, has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel,” Ibrahim said.

He said the new emir, who previously held the traditional title of Chiroman Gumel, served as Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) before his appointment.

Ibrahim said Namadi commended the kingmakers of the Gumel Emirate Council, led by the Wazirin Gumel, Alhaji Adamu Muhammad Nasoro, for their role in the selection process.

The governor also appreciated the Emirs of Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim and Dutse, who constitute the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs, for their advice during the process.

Namadi congratulated the new emir and expressed confidence in his ability to provide effective leadership to the Gumel Emirate.

The Governor, on behalf of the Jigawa Government, congratulates the new Emir on his appointment and wishes him many years of successful service to Gumel Emirate, the state and the nation,” the SSG said.
