NAFDAC Warns Public to Avoid Recalled Nivea Black & White Roll-On Over Health Risks

Recalled product, Nivea BLACK & WHITE Invisible Roll-On, 50ml, bar code 42299882

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about using a recently recalled batch of Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant, 50ml, manufactured in Germany.

The recall follows a health alert issued by the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) in Brussels.

Key Details of the Product Recall

  • Product Name: Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-on Deodorant
  • Batch Number: 93529610
  • Bar Code: 42299882
  • Manufacturer: Germany
  • Reported Risks: Reproductive harm, fetal health impairment, skin irritation, burns

In an official statement, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said that the product contains 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde (BMHCA), a chemical banned in cosmetics due to its potentially harmful effects on the reproductive system and the health of unborn children.

“The recalled Nivea product… may impair the health of an unborn child and cause skin irritation and burns to users,” explained Prof. Adeyeye. NAFDAC has, therefore, asked importers, distributors, and retailers to ensure the product is removed from the Nigerian market.

What to Do if You Have the Product
NAFDAC advises all Nigerians to avoid using this product and submit any stock they possess to the nearest NAFDAC office. The agency also encourages healthcare providers and consumers to report any adverse reactions linked to this or similar products through NAFDAC’s pharmacovigilance platforms or the Med-safety application, available on Android and iOS.

This alert comes less than two months after NAFDAC warned the public against using Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap. The European Union recalled Dove’s batch number 81832M 08 due to BMHCA, which poses reproductive and skin sensitization risks.
