NAFDAC Halts Sachet Alcohol Registration to Curb Youth Access

In an effort to limit the availability of sachet alcohol, especially among young people, NAFDAC announced that it has stopped registering such products since February 2024.

The move aligns with the agency’s broader strategy to safeguard public health and maintain global health standards. NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, discussed the agency’s upcoming initiatives, focusing on strengthening its workforce, enhancing safety protocols, and improving maternal and child health in 2025.

Adeyeye emphasized that the agency’s current staff of 2,000 is insufficient to manage its growing regulatory responsibilities, and NAFDAC plans to increase its staff with the help of volunteers and additional hires.

The agency is also investing in infrastructure, including new state offices and laboratories, to streamline operations.

A major priority for NAFDAC in 2025 is addressing maternal, newborn, and child health, with a focus on improving access to essential health products and medicines.

The agency is also expanding its oversight of herbal medicines and cosmetics, promoting local manufacturing and ensuring regulatory compliance.

NAFDAC aims to improve the safety of regulated products through advanced tracking technologies, which will help monitor the supply chain and prevent the distribution of counterfeit goods.

Despite facing challenges like understaffing and funding constraints, the agency remains committed to promoting public health and fostering a stronger local pharmaceutical industry.
