NAF admits fault for Nasarawa airstrike

The Nigerian Air Force has taken responsibility for a tragic airstrike in Nasarawa State, admitting that it unintentionally caused civilian casualties.

This acknowledgment has sparked discussions about accountability and reconciliation in the aftermath of the unfortunate event that occurred in January 2023.

Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, the Chief of Air Staff, expressed regret during a visit to Governor Abdullahi Sule in Lafia on Friday.

Abubakar praised the governor’s leadership and emphasized the importance of reconciliation and accountability in the wake of the incident.

He offered condolences to the families affected by the accidental airstrike in Rukubi and stated that their primary focus is to minimize the impact of the tragedy and ensure justice for those who lost their loved ones.

“We extend our condolences to the families affected by the accidental airstrike in Rukubi,” stated Air Marshal Abubakar.

According to Abubakar, the airstrike was carried out based on intelligence reports of suspected terrorist activities in the Agudu area near Rukubi in Doma local government area.

He highlighted the challenges of combating insurgency while trying to minimize harm to civilians.

The tragic incident received widespread condemnation, leading to calls for accountability.

Governor Abdullahi Sule expressed gratitude to the Chief of Air Staff and acknowledged the significance of the occasion, marking one year since the unfortunate airstrike incident.

He shared a poignant encounter with a Fulani elder who lost everything in the airstrike, finding resilience in the face of adversity.

Reflecting on the political landscape, Governor Sule pledged to heed the Chief of Air Staff’s counsel, drawing from his own experiences in navigating legal challenges during his tenure.

He extended an open invitation for collaboration, expressing a willingness to work with David Ombugadu, the governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 elections, for the collective good of the state.

 

Addressing security concerns, Governor Sule affirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to combating threats to peace and security in Nasarawa State.

 

He praised the Air Force’s compassionate approach towards compensating the victims’ families and highlighted collaborative efforts between the government and community leaders to assuage tensions and foster reconciliation.

 

Sidi Bage, the Emir of Lafia, commended the Chief of Air Staff for his exemplary gesture of compassion and commitment to justice.

 

He also praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its responsiveness to the plight of the victims, signaling a collective resolve towards reconciliation and healing.
