N1.7m Deal Turns Sour as Kano Trader Lands in Court

A 38-year-old trader, Musbahu Rabiu, has been hauled before a Kano Sharia Court over an alleged betrayal of trust that has now spiraled into a legal battle.

Rabiu, a resident of Rijiyar Lemon Quarters in Kano, is facing a three-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust, cheating, and mischief. He pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

Presenting the case, prosecutor Aisha Digol told the court that the complainant, Bello Magaji of Bakori Local Government Area, lodged a report at the Fagge Police Station on April 13.

She explained that Magaji had entrusted the defendant with provisions valued at N1.7 million to sell on his behalf. However, when the time came to remit the proceeds, Rabiu allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory account.

Efforts to recover the money, she added, proved abortive.

The offences, according to the prosecution, violate Sections 202 and 206 of the Penal Code.

Presiding over the matter, Judge Malam Mustapha Ashiru ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Goron Dutse Correctional Centre in Kano.

The case has been adjourned until June 2 for further hearing.
