The Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu has ordered the enforcement of the traffic law, prohibiting the operations of commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as ‘okada’ in Minna with effect from January 2, 2014.
This was contained in a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Niger State Government, Mr. Danladi Ndayebo, who noted that the government has made adequate arrangements to subsidise the effect of the policy.
Ndayebo stated that the traffic law has come to stay and there would be no going back in the enforcement process which would commence from the first week of 2014.
He also assured that the motorcyclists would not be out of jobs because tricycles would be handed to them through the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN).
Ndayebo stated that the State’s Ministry of Transportation has received 1,000 tricycles, eight units of 18-seater buses in addition to the 12 units of 100 capacity Bus Rapid Transport already in operation in the state to ease the problem of transportation.
