Mo Abudu named Guest Programmer for Academy Museum of the Oscars organizers She will be in charge of a number of films labeled Echoes of Africa in this capacity.

Mo Abudu, a Nigerian filmmaker, has announced that she will be working as a guest programmer at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles leading up to the 96th Academy Awards.

For many years, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences—the organization in charge of the Oscars—has designated the Academy Museum as its official museum.

Her responsibilities include presenting a series of film screenings under the Echoes of Africa label. Echoes of Africa is going to explore “African experiences, triumphs, dreams, and realities through a captivating lineup of films, which will be presented in partnership with the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP).”

A variety of African films, including The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun (1999), Le Franc (1994), Vaya Timbuktu, This is Not a Burial, It’s a Ressurection, and Monangambé (1968), will be screened at the event, which is set to take place in Los Angeles from February 1 to 9, 2024.

Abudu states that “ECHOES OF AFRICA presents a vivid mosaic of African perspectives, capturing the enduring resonance of its cinema.” In addition, she said that connecting with the African story through the experience was essential. According to her description, “An enthralling cinematic odyssey awaits, promising to leave you stirred, enlightened, and intimately connected with Africa’s vibrant essence.”

The influence that Nollywood filmmakers have been having on the global cinema industry is highlighted by this appointment. Nigerians, such as actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, have also been asked by the Academy to vote in a few of its categories.

The date of the 96th Academy Awards is set for March 11, 2024.
