The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr. Nazir Sani Gwarzo, has highlighted the importance of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members adopting the culture of the Ministry and developing effective communication skills.
He addressed this during a seminar on Effective Communication Skills and Public Speaking, organized for NYSC members at the Ministry’s Headquarters, on Wednesday in Abuja.
Dr. Gwarzo stressed that NYSC members serving in the Ministry should distinguish themselves with confidence and the ability to deliver messages effectively to their target audiences.
He emphasized, “It is my responsibility not only to ensure your happiness here but also to set you on a path of progress, helping you rise and remember your time with us.”
He explained that the tasks assigned to the Corps members are intentional, encouraging them to give their best and come up with possible solutions.
The goal is not just academic but also to document their experiences and contributions to the police ecosystem.
“This year of service is a transition from learning to implementation,” he said. “You are moving from theoretical learning to facing the real world, which can be tough. We aim to further prepare you for this transition.”
Dr. Gwarzo recalled a previous interaction with the Corps members where he noticed a lack of confidence among some.
This observation led to the organization of the seminar to enhance their public speaking and communication skills.
During the seminar, Media and Communication Specialist Mr. Oliver Iorkase presented seven key communication skills necessary for effective communication, completeness, conciseness, consideration, concreteness, clarity, courtesy, and correctness.
He emphasized the importance of considering social-demographic factors such as sex, age, language, and religion, as well as the value of attentive listening.
Mr. Adetoyinbo Oluwaferanmi Pamilerin, the team leader of the Corps members in the Ministry, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and learn in the Ministry.
He noted that the experience and training would significantly enhance their ability to communicate effectively in any field they choose to pursue.
Pamilerin thanked the Permanent Secretary and the Directors for their support and the valuable learning experiences provided during their service.
