Miner Lands in Jail After Pocketing N670,000

A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday handed a two-year prison sentence to a 27-year-old miner, Ibrahim Kamilu, after he admitted to charges of criminal breach of trust and cheating.

Magistrate Irene Pati delivered a summary judgment following Kamilu’s guilty plea to the two-count charge. She offered him an option of a N30,000 fine or one-year imprisonment for the breach of trust offence.

For the cheating charge, Pati imposed an additional N20,000 fine or another one-year jail term, depending on the convict’s choice.

The court further directed Kamilu to pay N570,000 in compensation to the victim.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Inrahim Gokwat informed the court that the matter was lodged on Oct. 24 at the Laranto Police Station by the complainant, Mohammed Nafiu.

According to Gokwat, the miner had been entrusted with N670,000 to purchase chemicals, but he diverted the funds for personal use. Upon his arrest, police were able to recover N100,000 from him.

The offences, he noted, are punishable under the Plateau Penal Code.
