Tech giant, Microsoft is deliberating the closure of its African Development Centre located in Lagos, Nigeria.
If finalized, this decision could have far-reaching implications for both job opportunities and technological advancement in Nigeria’s burgeoning tech landscape.
Sources familiar with the matter suggest that the potential closure stems from the challenging economic conditions prevalent in Nigeria.
This move has shown the fragility of the business environment and the impact it can have on multinational corporations operating within the country.
The Lagos-based development centre, established as part of Microsoft’s $100 million African Development Centers initiative, played a pivotal role in nurturing local talent and fostering innovation.
A Microsoft statement stated, “This also creates opportunities for engineers to do meaningful work from their home countries and be plugged into a global engineering and development organisation.”
Its closure would not only disrupt ongoing projects but also hamper efforts to address technological challenges both within Africa and on a global scale.
While the fate of the Lagos center hangs in the balance, Microsoft’s East Africa facility in Nairobi, Kenya, appears unaffected by the potential closure.
