Mexican President Opposes Gulf of Mexico Name Change on Google Maps

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has raised concerns about Google Maps adopting the name change for the Gulf of Mexico.

On Thursday, Sheinbaum presented a letter from the Mexican government to Google, urging the company to disregard the decision by former President Donald Trump to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

Reports indicate that Google is preparing to update its platform to reflect this name change.

The tech giant explained that it usually follows official government changes in names when updating its maps, and the Gulf of America name will appear once the Geographic Names Information System, a U.S. government database, is updated.

In addition, Google will update the name of Mount McKinley, now known as Denali, following a similar executive action from President Trump.

The U.S. government’s changes aim to recognize American heritage and honor historical figures.
