Meta has launched two new monetization tools for eligible content creators in Kenya, effective from August 6, 2024.
These tools, in-stream ads and Facebook ads on reels, can be integrated into videos before, during, or after playback, applicable to both prerecorded and live-streamed content.
This initiative, supported in over 30 languages including Swahili, aims to provide Kenyan video creators with new revenue opportunities.
According to Meta, these tools will not only enable creators to earn but also raise the bar for creativity worldwide, making Meta’s suite of apps a comprehensive platform for creators.
To utilize these features, creators must comply with Facebook’s partner and content monetization policies, which include a minimum age requirement of 18.
For in-stream ads, creators must have at least 5,000 followers and 60,000 watch minutes in the past 60 days, among other criteria.
These ads can appear as pre-roll, mid-roll, image, or post-roll ads in on-demand videos.
This rollout follows President Ruto’s proposal in December 2023 and a subsequent trial program with selected Kenyan creators.
In June 2024, Meta extended Facebook monetization to creators in Nigeria and Ghana, adding to the list of countries like Egypt, South Africa, and Rwanda where this feature is available.
In Kenya, Facebook is used by 52% of people aged 15 and older, with 31.96% of social media users on Facebook and 7.56% on Instagram.
Previously, in February 2022, Meta announced that creators in 20 sub-Saharan African countries, including South Africa, Seychelles, Senegal, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Kenya, could earn from Facebook Reels and in-stream ads.
