Meta has successfully thwarted a hacking attempt targeting the WhatsApp accounts of US officials from both the Biden and Trump administrations.
The intrusion was linked to APT42, an Iranian cyber group associated with Iranian military intelligence.
The hackers, posing as technical support from major companies, aimed to deceive officials into revealing their account information.
However, Meta intervened swiftly after detecting suspicious activity and blocked the fraudulent accounts.
Fortunately, no WhatsApp accounts were compromised.
APT42 is known for its use of advanced surveillance software for espionage, including monitoring calls and stealing messages.
This attack is part of a broader pattern of cyber threats targeting US presidential campaigns, a concern that has been highlighted by tech giants like Microsoft and Google.
The hacking group focused on political, diplomatic, and business figures across various countries, including the US, Israel, Palestinian territories, Iran, and the UK.
