Mass Protests Erupt in Israel Over Hostage Deaths, Strikes Called to Pressure Netanyahu

Israel is witnessing widespread protests following the confirmation by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) that the bodies of six hostages, held by Hamas in Gaza, were retrieved on Sunday.

The hostages—Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Eden Yerushalmi, Carmel Gat, Almog Sarusi, Alexander Lobanov, and Ori Danino—were reportedly killed shortly before IDF forces reached their location after nearly 11 months in captivity.

On Sunday evening, protesters blocked the entrance to Jerusalem for over two hours before shifting to Tel Aviv, where an estimated 300,000 people gathered to demand an immediate hostage deal. The Hostage and Missing Families Forum, representing the relatives of those still held in Gaza, organized the protest, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of failing to secure a deal to bring the hostages home alive.

In Tel Aviv, the protests intensified as demonstrators, including the Women’s Protest for the Hostages, blocked the Ayalon Highway, setting bonfires and holding large posters of the hostages. Clashes between protesters and police ensued, leading to the injury of MK Naama Lazimi, who was struck by a stun grenade thrown by police attempting to clear the highway.

The Hostage and Missing Families Forum issued a powerful statement, condemning Netanyahu’s handling of the situation: “Their blood is on the hands of the government. We have waited for nearly a year, and this is the outcome? This failure is unforgivable.”

Arnon Bar-David, head of Israel’s largest trade union, Histadrut, announced a general strike starting Monday, September 2, to further pressure Netanyahu’s government. The strike is expected to affect major sectors, including banking, healthcare, and Israel’s main airport, Ben Gurion. In his call to action, Bar-David stated, “We cannot stand idly by while our brothers and sisters are left to die. The government must act now, or we will bring the country to a standstill.”

The protests have also drawn attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with many demonstrators calling for a ceasefire. A statement from one protester captured the widespread sentiment: “Enough is enough. How many more lives must be lost before this government realizes that military action alone is not the solution?”

This latest wave of protests is the largest since the onset of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza in October 2023. Demonstrators are calling for a ceasefire deal with Hamas, accusing Netanyahu of prioritizing military action over the lives of the hostages. The Hostage and Missing Families Forum directly blamed Netanyahu for the deaths, stating, “They were all murdered in the last few days, after surviving almost 11 months.”

The situation remains tense, with ongoing protests and the looming general strike set to increase pressure on the Netanyahu administration to reach a deal with Hamas and bring the remaining hostages home.
