Over 1,000 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have defected to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State on Sunday.
The defection took place in the Tofa and Ghari Local Government Areas, marking a notable shift in the state’s political landscape.
The defectors were officially received into the NNPP by the party’s Kano State chairman, Dr. Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa, during two separate ceremonies held in Tofa and Ghari.
The events were attended by key figures within the party and were organized in conjunction with the NNPP’s flag-off of their chairmanship campaign, which is part of the preparations for the upcoming local government elections.
Both Tofa and Ghari have witnessed a growing wave of support for the NNPP, and the recent defection of over 1,000 APC members is expected to bolster the party’s chances in the elections.
The NNPP’s candidates for the chairmanship positions in the upcoming polls, Yakubu Ibrahim Adis for Tofa and Hashimu Mai Sabulu for Ghari, were also present at the ceremonies.
Both candidates expressed their confidence in the NNPP’s increasing popularity and influence in the region, thanks to the influx of new members.
The campaign launch, coupled with the mass defections, was seen as a powerful statement of the NNPP’s rising political strength in Kano State.
According to Dr. Dungurawa, the party is gaining momentum, and the enthusiasm of the new members will further solidify the NNPP’s standing ahead of the elections.
Both Adis and Mai Sabulu are optimistic that the party will secure significant victories in the local government elections, with the recent defections serving as a strong indicator of the shifting political dynamics in the state.
