Veteran Nigerian singer Sola Allyson has confirmed that though she is legally married, she does not live with her husband.
In an interview with Oyinmomo TV, she explained, “I am married but not living with my husband. He stays in his house and I stay in mine. That’s the love that people older than us didn’t let us know is hard.”
She said that older generations often presented marriage as a simple path to happiness, a view she finds misleading. “They made it seem like once you love each other, you will live happily ever after; and that was not my experience,” she said.
She described her marriage as a partnership rather than ownership. “Saying I am in my husband’s house is different from saying I married my husband. My husband and I married each other; we are in one another’s life,” Allyson noted.
The 54-year old singer also shared how her parents’ dysfunctional marriage shaped her. “To my parents, I was like bait. They never spoke directly but sent me back and forth with insults disguised as errands. They used me against each other, and it scared me,” she revealed.
Despite public perception, Allyson has stated that she does not identify as a gospel artist. “I have never called myself a gospel artiste. My name is Sola Allyson, and I am a singer,” she said.
She explained that her music is guided by personal conviction rather than religious branding. On why she avoids mentioning Jesus in her songs, she stated, “Jesus didn’t say we should be mentioning His name. He didn’t say we should use His name for PR.” She noted that while many artists rely on religious labels for acceptance, she prefers honesty and emotional truth in her music. “I follow my spirit and do not create songs just to meet people’s expectations,” she added.
Allyson also shared her perspective on feminism, clarifying that her advocacy is about equality rather than hostility toward men. “Feminism is not saying men are bad. It’s about giving women the same choices that men have. Let everyone choose what they want to do, and then we guide them,” she said.
