Maresca Criticises Chelsea’s Flat Display After Costly 3–1 Defeat to Leeds

Chelsea’s Premier League title push suffered a major jolt on Wednesday night after a surprising 3–1 loss to struggling Leeds at Elland Road.

Manager Enzo Maresca did not hide his frustration, describing his team’s performance as far below the required level.

Leeds struck early through Jaka Bijol before Ao Tanaka added a brilliant second just before half-time, exposing Chelsea’s sluggish start.

Pedro Neto came off the bench to pull one back shortly after the restart, but a late defensive blunder allowed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to restore Leeds’ two-goal cushion and secure a vital win for the hosts.

The defeat, Chelsea’s first in eight matches across all competitions, leaves them nine points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Maresca admitted his players were second best throughout the match, noting that the intensity they showed in recent games against Arsenal and Barcelona was missing.

He stressed the need for the squad to reset and quickly rediscover their rhythm.

Chelsea were also dealing with the absence of Moises Caicedo, who was suspended following his red card against Arsenal.

His absence, combined with the physical toll from Sunday’s tense draw, contributed to Chelsea’s disjointed display. Maresca had rested Neto, Reece James and Wesley Fofana, yet the team still looked fatigued.

Leeds, who had lost four straight games before this fixture, capitalised fully on Chelsea’s errors.

Tanaka’s long-range strike and Calvert-Lewin’s late tap-in came from situations that highlighted Chelsea’s defensive lapses, including a miscommunication between Malo Gusto and Tosin Adarabioyo that led to the third goal.

Despite Neto’s early second-half goal and a near equaliser from returning forward Cole Palmer, Chelsea never established control.

The result places renewed pressure on the Blues as they attempt to keep pace in the title race.
