A man was brutally assaulted by a mob in Onitsha, Anambra State, after being accused of stealing money in an incident that has sparked outrage over the persistence of jungle justice.
A video circulating on Facebook showed the visibly battered victim repeatedly swearing on the lives of his mother and siblings that he was innocent and had not stolen the money.
The disturbing footage was shared by the Chairman of the Human Rights Defenders (HURIDE), Ebonyi State chapter, Sampson Iko Nweke, who claimed the man was later confirmed to be innocent of the allegation, The News Chronicle gathered.
“See what Igbo brothers did to a fellow brother over a mere unverified accusation of theft,” Nweke wrote.
“Now, it has been confirmed the guy didn’t steal the money after receiving this level of jungle treatment.
“Stop jungle justice, especially over minor issues. Treat others the way you would like to be treated. This guy must seek redress immediately. Who knows him, please?”
The incident has renewed concerns over the growing trend of mob justice and the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands without proper investigation.
