Mamelodi Sundowns secured their seventh consecutive South African Premier League title with a commanding 5-0 victory over local rivals Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
This win reaffirms their status as the most successful club in South Africa, boasting a total of 14 league titles since the league’s inception in 1996.
Despite facing strong opposition from Kaizer Chiefs, who managed to hold them to a goalless draw in the first half, Sundowns broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute when Tashreeq Matthews converted a pass from Lucas Costa to put them ahead.
Their lead was further extended four minutes later by an Argentine midfielder, making it 2-0. Matthews secured his brace in the 82nd minute, bringing the score to 3-0, before Costa Lucas and Thembinkosi Lorch added late goals to seal the victory with a wide margin.
Although Kaizer Chiefs attempted to reduce the deficit, their efforts were not enough to prevent Sundowns from claiming the title.
Sundowns clinched the title with six games remaining to complete the season, accumulating 62 points from 24 league matches. With a 13-point gap already established, second-placed Stellenbosch would only be able to earn 12 points from their remaining four games even if they won all of them.
Despite their domestic success, Sundowns were unable to advance to the final of the CAF Champions League this season, suffering a defeat to Esperance Tunis of Tunisia with an aggregate score of 2-0 over two legs.
