Macron Pledges Stronger French Support for Nigeria’s Fight Against Terrorism

French President Emmanuel Macron has promised to increase France’s support for Nigeria as the country continues to battle terrorism and insecurity, especially in the northern region.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Macron said he spoke with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and expressed France’s solidarity with Nigeria in facing its security challenges. He highlighted the ongoing threat from terrorist groups in the North and assured that France would “strengthen our partnership with the authorities and our support for the affected populations.”
Macron also urged other international partners to do more, saying that “no one can remain a spectator” while insecurity grows.
Northern Nigeria continues to face attacks from Boko Haram and ISWAP, while instability in neighbouring Sahel countries threatens to worsen cross-border violence. Experts say more international support could help Nigeria improve its response to terrorism, protect vulnerable communities, and stabilise border areas.
Although Macron’s promise is mainly diplomatic and does not automatically mean France will deploy troops, it could lead to increased intelligence-sharing, military training, humanitarian assistance, and possibly coordinated regional security operations.
For Nigeria, which is still struggling with persistent insurgency in the North, France’s renewed commitment could provide a significant boost.
